From Country

Mujaay Ganma

Mujaay Ganma has exciting news to share this month.

Firstly and this is something the Nambucca Valley community contributed to!

Mujaay Ganma took delivery of a dual cab 4WD Ute which will make such a difference to our Custodial Regen Team as well as to the Country they are regenerating and contribute to the long term viability of the organisation itself. This has been something we have needed for some time. We can now fit a bigger team into the vehicle which can now access sites in difficult terrain.

Mujaay Ganma was only able to do this with the generosity of Jane & Kristy, owners of  Matilda’s at Nambucca and the 300 plus people who supported the Celebrating Country event held on 26 January this year. Matilda’s has been donating the profits from opening on this day now for the past 3 years and have generously supported the work being done at the Yuraal Native Nursery.

In addition to this donation, which covered the cost of the Mitsubishi Triton from Better Value Motors (who contributed a 12 month warranty), Jimmy Angel came to the party. On hearing that Matilda’s was donating the cost of the Ute, so needed by the Mujaay Ganma Regen Team, Bowraville Tyre and Auto offered to donate all ongoing maintenance and servicing to ensure the team can stay ‘on the road’.

As we celebrate the Freedom Ride in Bowraville 60 years ago this week, it feels like we really can celebrate the changes in our community. Aunty Ruth Walker, was deeply moved by all this generosity “It means everything to Mujaay Ganma to have this donation. This Ute will help our younger generation to do the work that will help Country and everyone here.”

Secondly and happily also contributing to the Nambucca Valley, we received a grant.

Mujaay Ganma has been working with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) to design a project which we feel is very important for the Nambucca River. It is called the Nambucca River Cultural Restoration Strategy. This is particularly significant as it includes guidance from the Elders who knew the river 70-80 years ago.

It will involve taking the Elders and members of the Custodial Regen Team out on the river, (with the support of NPWS), where they will identify significant places on the Warrell Creek side of Gaagal Wanggaan. Not only will they be sharing stories but also sharing how the riparian zone looked back then and the native species that were growing there. This will mean that apart from the natives still present, the Mujaay Ganma Regen Team will be planting the species that thrived there in the past.

This work, as well as the work that Miimi’s Mindulum Rangers are doing will all contribute to the health of the river in its estuarine region. Before long we hope to also be able to work up river to ensure the continued health of the wonderful Nambucca River system.

Celebrating 60th Anniversary of the FREEDOM RIDE

On February 24th our Nambucca Valley community came together for the 60th Anniversary of FREEDOM RIDE BOWRAVILLE.  The day saw a Walk of Respect at 10:00am starting at the Bowraville Central School. The ‘Walk of Respect’ went up High Street to the Bowraville Theatre.
Once in the theatre the community were greeted by Ricky Buchanan as he delivered a Welcome to Country. The morning was filled with short films, Elders sharing their story, performances from the St Mary’s School and a speech by Councillor David Jones.

As the morning continued, the community moved to Grants Hall to look at a special Photo Display and have a delicious  Morning Tea.

Gumbaynggirr Gingana Freedom School Performance showcased their talents  before the community moved to a light lunch and refreshments at the Bowraville Sports Hub with live entertainment from the Donovan Band.

Jaanymili Bawrrungga stated “A huge thank you to our incredible sponsors for making this event possible: Wesley Mission, NIAA, AANSW, Nambucca Valley Council, Fortade, Mid North Coast Local Health District, Bowra Sports Hub, Bowraville Theatre and Durri ACMS.

We also want to give a special shoutout to Maitilda’s in Nambucca Heads for generously donating the cake, and to the wonderful women who travelled from Bellingen and Coffs Harbour to help with the decorations over the past three weeks. Your time, energy, and support mean the world to us!”
Jaanymili Bawrrungga hosted with event in partnership with Mid North Coast Local Health District, Wesley Mission, Bowra Sports Hub, Durri, and Matildas.

Club Scotts under new leadership

The beginning of a new year has given Club Scotts the chance to start things off in a different direction for 2025. The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that they have appointed a new Secretary Manager – Mark Singh.

Chairperson Julie Kay said, “Mark has an extensive background in hospitality management and great experience from some of the largest venues in Australia. He is a father of 3, a member of the Scotts Head RFS Brigade and is also involved with the Macksville-Scotts Head SLSC. It is great to have someone from within our own community, with such experience ready to help the club move forward”

The Board would also like to thank Ben Kenay for his efforts, who had stepped into the role of Acting Secretary Manager over the past 12 months and also acknowledge the hard work by all our staff during that period”.

“I’ve had family living in the area for the last 10 years and we have always found it to be such a beautiful place to visit”, said Mr Singh. “My family and I relocated to Scotts Head in October of 2023 and found the community so welcoming and it was something that we wanted to be a part of”.

Club Scotts has such potential to be an amazing venue, not only for our members; but the visitors to our seaside village & a place that the whole community can be proud of”

Our stories

Nambucca Valley Phoenix welcomes new Manager - Fiona Welsh

NAMBUCCA Valley Phoenix is excited to introduce their new manager, Fiona Welsh.

With extensive experience in the community services sector and a background in Marketing and Management, Fiona, a Bowraville local, is passionate about community engagement. “My goal for inclusion comes out of a deep sense of the importance of celebrating unique individuals in their quest for participation and belonging—embracing a whole-of-community approach,” said Fiona.

Fiona is excited about Phoenix’s diverse facilities, vibrant programs, and the opportunity to enhance the lives of all involved. “On the site tour, the convivial atmosphere completely wooed me. I was struck with an epiphany—‘these are my people; I have found my tribe,’” she said.

The coming year is already packed with excitement including expansion of the Permaculture Garden thanks to funding from ETC activating the space at “the depot” that includes a small plant nursery, providing employment, training and skill development opportunities.

Fiona is also working with Café Supervisor Carla to expand the menu, extend hours, and promote healthy food options.

The vision supports Phoenix being on the map as a standout Arts and Tourist destination contributing to the promotion of the area and supportive of the vibrant cottage and creative industries of the Nambucca Valley.

Mark your calendars for the Phoenix Ball on 6 September 2025, with tickets available now (https://events.humanitix.com/phoenix-ball-2025).

This coincides with the coveted Phoenix Arts prize (kicks off the same day), and this year Phoenix Gallery will also be opening up a slot in the gallery calendar for a combined local artists open exhibition.

In the meantime, community members are welcome to come and meet Fiona at Phoenix anytime.

If you are interested in volunteering, participating in the programs or financially contributing through a donation do not hesitate to come and make some inquiries in person.

CELEBRATION DAY IN THE NAMBUCCA VALLEY

The Nambucca Valley National Celebration Day Awards were hosted at the Nambucca Heads RSL on 25 January 2025. The event was a huge success with community coming together to celebrate the outstanding achievements of individuals and teams in the valley. Our community welcomed 8 new Australian Citizens in a Citizenship Ceremony.

We also met Nambucca Valley Australia Day Ambassador Corey Payne, NSW Young Australian of the Year 2013 and former NRL Player. Corey is the Founder of the Future Direction Network which aims to inform, inspire and educate students from Western Sydney. He is a passionate advocate of further education and has been recognised for his work in this field on multiple occasions.
